I've been thinking about what might be a more appropriate way of conveying a ‘flip’ between Metaphysical and Epistemological purviews than last month's ‘hola-hoop’. I'm wondering whether an extreme change in the viewpoint's field of view might on its own be enough to ‘turn everything inside-out’?
For instance, starting off with a normal field of view (about 45°), imagine we find ourselves at the centre of a hollow sphere. It is interactive so we can rotate our viewpoint all around. No colour, just black and white: one inner pole culminates in absorbing blackness, the other in bright light; the surface in between these two extremes is a smooth gradation of light to dark greys.
This simple environment represents (and feels like) looking out at the world from a first-person perspective (Epistemological purview).
Then ‘the flip’…
The field of view is suddenly increased to an unnatural maximum (360°) — the most exaggerated fisheye lens. The visual effect is of turning everything inside-out; we are now external to the sphere. Any interaction seems to move the sphere rather than our seemingly fixed viewpoint.
It represents looking in at the universal whole from a third-person perspective (Metaphysical purview).
I might have an actual interactive ready by next month…
