Onion

Visualising the structure of Objectivism

An onion model is a suitable metaphor for the proposed ‘game’ to describe the structure of Objectivism in at least two senses.

Firstly, as the structure is hierarchical, the objects represented in the 3D scene could be ‘unpeeled’. Metaphysics as the outermost layer (mist, sea, sky); Epistemology as a boat contained within that ‘sphere’; Ethics as an island tree around which the boat circles; Politics as a pulley system that circles or spirals towards the centre of the tree’s canopy; Aesthetics as an attractive flower that transforms into a fruit with a seed at the core of the world.

Secondly, as a level of (computer graphic) complexity. It is not that each philosophical ‘onion skin’ becomes more detailed but that levels of complexity (idealised realism) increase when the player makes the correct moves and decrease when they do not or do nothing. Consequently, the player is visually rewarded for progress. This progress involves grasping and integrating increasingly robust integrations between the five philosophical branches. Thus, a successful player would be able to maintain the most attractive and visually stimulating level of the game throughout (enjoying greater randomness as well).
