Five Things, Each Subdivided By Three?

Subdividing each of the five branches of philosophy by three may reveal a pattern of trichotomies running through (a more metaphysical element, a more epistemological element, a more axiological element).

1. Metaphysics

The sea and the air/sky emerge from the initial mist.

  • Mist = Existence
  • Sea = Consciousness
  • Air = Identity

2. Epistemology

A boat’s hull, peddles and the user powering those peddles and steering the boat (presumably with a rudder).

  • The hull = Sensation
  • The pedals = Perception
  • The navigator = Conception

3. Ethics

A rock, with moss forming (as the boat nears) and then a tree emerging from the mossy soil.

  • Rock = Reason
  • Moss/Soil = Purpose
  • Tree = Self-Esteem

4. Politics

A pulley system: upper frame, lower frame, connecting rope.

  • Lower frame = Individual Rights
  • Rope = Happiness
  • Upper frame = Capitalism

5. Æsthetics

The fruit’s outer peel/rind/skin, the inner mesocarp/endocarp (pulp, flesh), the seed/s (pips, stone, kernel).

  • Outer skin = Art (the selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value judgments)
  • Inner flesh = Romanticism
  • Seeds = Concretisation of Metaphysics
